We often hear people say, “I’ve started a new life” – in a new place, in a new relationship, in new circumstances. But true renewal does not happen externally, but internally. The story of Jacob is about how, in the midst of a broken life, God changes not the circumstances, but the heart. Because what we cannot change in ourselves, God can do.

I am not saying that you cannot make mistakes as a parent because everybody makes mistakes… but when one disobeys God as the leader of his family when making important decisions of great significance, that can have unforeseeable consequences not only for himself but for his whole family.

Many of us have had bad experiences with leadership - whether in our family, at a workplace, in politics or even at church. This evening, we will go back to one of the foundational images of the Bible to see what kind of leadership God wants. Then we will pray together for the present and future leaders of the church.
